Deriving Solutions to Higher Order Polynomials (With a Modern Afterword)

Authors: Victor Wang

Through a high school student’s lens, we investigate the classical problem of relating a polynomial’s roots to its coefficients and demonstrate how to derive the solution to the cubic and quartic using radicals, as well as the trigonometric solution to the real-rooted cubic. In the afterword, we discuss the history of the problem, as well as the history of how this work came to be.
