Researchers in the Light-Matter Interactions for Quantum Technologies Unit at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) have generated Rydberg atoms—unusually large excited atoms—near nanometer-thin optical fibers. [41] A new theoretical analysis shows that laser photons used for cooling atoms have a unique thermal distribution that could be used to study many-body physics. [40] Researchers have now shown that all these lasers can be replaced by a single device called a microcomb. [39]
