De-a lungul timpului s-au folosit diferite tipuri de mecanisme de poziţionare cu precizie ridicata, printre printre cele mai performante fiind manipulatoarele şi roboţii industriali, punându-se accent în ultimul timp pe precizia de pozitionare, corelata cu interactiunea in mediu virtual, in vederea redării haptice a contactului obiect-mediu operational, in scopul utilizarii lor in operații care necesită o acuratețe ridicată, cum ar fi teleoperarea in medii periculoase, interacțiuni haptice in domeniul medical, nanorobotică etc.
